Carvaan: The Genius of SaReGaMa

The Indian music industry shifts trends every two decades or so. While the '50s, '60s and '70s were about meaningful lyrics and the '80s to '90s emphasized on melodious tunes and dance-able tracks with lesser emphasis on lyrics, the last decade and a half has been about captivating groovy music with the introduction of pop, rap, remix and Punjabi along with some '90s-styled music. This regular shift in the popular music means that different age-groups of the Indian population consume and evaluate music differently. Their choices of and response to different genres, artistes or tunes differ significantly enough that it is sensible to view these groups as separate target segments. Consumers of music in India can be grouped into three distinct categories Gen X and older : Individuals born before the '80s The 'Golden-era' of Bollywood music ('50s, '60s and '70s) was their bread and butter in terms of the popular music of their gen...

With great Responsibility comes great Power - The Power to Do.. Or, How to get Yourself to Do and avoid Regrets

We all have heard the saying, “With great power comes great responsibility”. But the other way round is equally important to remember. Especially at the start of anything. Most of the times we run away from doing things because we don’t want to take the responsibility of our own success or failure. We would rather 'leave' it to chance. So that all the blame   of the failure goes to ‘chance’. And not the definite actions we take. That great idea you had in your mind about the next best product in the market but you didn’t follow up because of lack of time and resources, that’s now out in the market. The friends you wanted to meet but couldn’t because you had work in the office, they don’t call you to their gatherings now. That girl you wanted to talk to but didn’t because you were afraid she wouldn’t reciproca...

Habits: Why can’t you get over your Vicious Cycles?

We all know and crib about various kinds of vicious cycles in our lives. Hundreds of thousands of articles by self-help gurus — some successful and some not so much — have explained about the omnipresent vicious cycles of procrastination, over-eating and over-sleeping or bad relationships, among others. We all want to grow. But how many of us really outgrow them? We all want to change. Why then, are these vicious cycles still an integral part of our daily lives? Why are they still ingrained in our habits the way they are? To understand this evergreen problem with humans, we turn to my ever-reliable friend (field of study) who goes by the name, psychology.  Psychology  is the cornerstone for studying human behavior and decision making, while  Statistics  is the mathematical language of our brain’s thinking. (A post explaining this concept real soon!) Daniel Kahneman explains  in his famous book, “Thinking, Fast and Slow”, the two decision making hubs of the...

Why we should be good story-tellers?

Each one of us is a human being. As individuals, we define ourselves as we grow up. One of the most important aspects of life is that we believe in it. That there is a meaning to the whole process, that it is a  means to something . We take pride in who we are. Deep down  we believe in our story, our very own story WHO ARE YOU? What if someone asked you this? You could try to describe yourself right now. Take a pencil and write a small introduction. Go on.. I insist! If you talk to people you meet at different places and try asking them about themselves, you will see a common habit. Most of us define ourselves by the title of our current job or our job profile. If students, we define ourselves first by the department or the university we study in. Somehow, it is more important for us to show where we are, over anything else. But if you think about it, Whatever we are/think/do , everything seems to be horrifyingly common. If you are a scientist, ther...

Time, the Kingmaker

Time is Running Out! We all have things that we can never have enough of. For some, it’s the food right across the street from their home. For others, it’s money or shoes or watches. And for a lucky few, it’s good ol’ sleep. You can crave for all you want, but there’s one thing that all of us constantly wish we had more of. And that is  Time . For example, 2018 is here. Yes, 2018!! That went by fast, didn’t it? What did you do? Where did all that time go? Well, as we keep saying, we’ll figure it out in the next year. The next year will be amazing! Wait, didn’t we say that for 2017 just a  few days ago ?? It’s a  vicious cycle . You see what I am saying? “ We can never have enough of time in our lives. “ Where is all my Time? So where does our time go? This is not a mystery. Hundreds of thousands of articles by self-help gurus — some successful and some not so much — have enlightened us with the evergreen, omnipresen...
